ChainGE Lab Research Fellow
Dr Yahel Kurlander is a sociologist specializing in labor markets, focusing on labor migration and gender. She is a senior lecturer and the head of the Adult Program (BA) at Tel-Hai's Multidisciplinary Studies Department. In her research, she explores these fundamental issues in the fields of labor markets and global labor migration, especially vis-à-vis marginalized populations. Along with her academic pursuits, she is a dedicated activist deeply committed to various groups that advocate migration and gender issues.
Dr. Kurlander's research focuses as well on the agricultural labor force and migration in this sector, with an emphasis on labor implications in both local and international contexts. Her work examines the transformations in rural spaces, including the generational challenges and opportunities faced by multifarms, as well as the ways in which agriculture integrates tourism and diverse economic activities.
Dr. Kurlander's research at ChainGE Lab, together with Dr Avinoam Cohen, examines the interplay between government regulation, labor dynamics, and global value chains in agricultural production. Through a comparative analysis of the vegetable and dairy industries in Israel and Switzerland. They explore how different policy frameworks shape labor conditions, economic upgrading, and value distribution along the supply chain. They wish to understand the structural challenges and opportunities for more equitable and sustainable agricultural systems within global production networks.
